Recreational water illness prevention, 2009: charting a course through stormy waters.

چکیده
Editor’s note: NEHA strives to provide up-to-date and relevant information on environmental health and to build part nerships in the profession. In pursuit of these goals, we feature a column from the Environmental Health Services Branch (EHSB) of the Centers for Disease Con trol and Prevention (CDC) in every issue of the Journal. In this column, EHSB and guest au thors from across CDC will highlight a variety of concerns, opportunities, chal lenges, and successes that we all share in environmental public health. EHSB’s objective is to strengthen the role of state, local, and national environmental health programs and professionals to anticipate, identify, and respond to adverse environ mental exposures and the consequences of these exposures for human health. The services being developed through EHSB include access to topical, relevant, and scientific information; consultation; and assistance to environmental health spe cialists, sanitarians, and environmental health professionals and practitioners. Michael Beach is associate director for Healthy Water for CDC’s National Center for Zoonotic, Vector-Borne, and Enteric Diseases. He also leads the Water and Environment Ac tivity in CDC’s Division of Parasitic Diseases. The conclusions in this article are those of the author(s) and do not necessarily rep resent the views of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Estimated human health risks from exposure to recreational waters impacted by human and non-human sources of faecal contamination.
This work was conducted to determine whether estimated risks following exposure to recreational waters impacted by gull, chicken, pig, or cattle faecal contamination are substantially different than those associated with waters impacted by human sources such as treated wastewater. Previously published Quantitative Microbial Risk Assessment (QMRA) methods were employed and extended to meet these...
متن کاملCyanobacteria and Algae Blooms: Review of Health and Environmental Data from the Harmful Algal Bloom-Related Illness Surveillance System (HABISS) 2007–2011
Algae and cyanobacteria are present in all aquatic environments. We do not have a good sense of the extent of human and animal exposures to cyanobacteria or their toxins, nor do we understand the public health impacts from acute exposures associated with recreational activities or chronic exposures associated with drinking water. We describe the Harmful Algal Bloom-related Illness Surveillance ...

May 19–25, 2014, marks the 10th annual Recreational Water Illness and Injury Prevention Week. This observance highlights ways in which swimmers, parents, pool owners and operators, beach managers, and public health can maximize the health benefits of water-based physical activity, while avoiding water-associated illness and injury. To help keep swimming a healthy and safe activity, CDC has rece...
متن کاملDo U.S. Environmental Protection Agency water quality guidelines for recreational waters prevent gastrointestinal illness? A systematic review and meta-analysis.
Despite numerous studies, uncertainty remains about how water quality indicators can best be used in the regulation of recreational water. We conducted a systematic review of this topic with the goal of quantifying the association between microbial indicators of recreational water quality and gastrointestinal (GI) illness. A secondary goal was to evaluate the potential for GI illness below curr...
متن کاملTraditional and molecular analyses for fecal indicator bacteria in non-point source subtropical recreational marine waters.
The use of enterococci as the primary fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) for the determination of recreational water safety has been questioned, particularly in sub/tropical marine waters without known point sources of sewage. Alternative FIB (such as the Bacteroidales group) and alternative measurement methods (such as rapid molecular testing) have been proposed to supplement or replace current ma...
